Gotu Kola, a favorite of elephants in Sri Lanka (famous for their extraordinary memory), is a powerful herb for supporting brain health and cognitive function.*

Native to India, East Asia, and parts of South Africa, Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) thrives in shaded areas near rivers and ponds. This herb is commonly eaten as a green vegetable, either raw, cooked, or in juice form (though my teachers prefer a brain-boosting pesto!). It’s one of the most popular herbs in Ayurveda and is found in modern skincare, supplements, and teas.

Gotu Kola serves two main purposes: when taken internally, it promotes brain health and enhances memory, while topical applications support skin rejuvenation and a healthy inflammatory response. Interestingly, both uses are mirrored in how animals interact with this regenerative plant.

Elephants, known for their incredible memories, often eat Gotu Kola, reinforcing its reputation for boosting memory. Tigers, on the other hand, are said to rub their skin against Gotu Kola for healing, earning it the nickname “Tiger’s Herb.”

With leaves resembling the cerebellum, it’s no surprise that Gotu Kola offers cognitive benefits. In Nepal, it’s traditionally given to children in creative recipes to support concentration and memory. Research confirms Gotu Kola’s role in modulating neurotransmitters (aiding relaxation), supporting neural pathways, promoting nervous system health, and improving mental clarity and focus.*

When it comes to skin health, Gotu Kola is commonly found in salves, balms, and creams. Studies show it encourages healthy collagen production, making it a valuable ally for maintaining youthful skin as we age gracefully.*
